Billy Decker makes late race pass for Fulton Speedway win

06-17-2009

Billy Decker, who started deep in the pack, ran down leader Willy Decker and made the winning pass on lap 32 for his second DIRTcar Big Block Modified win of the year at Fulton Speedway Saturday night.

Other winners were Greg Kimball in the 20-lap DIRTcar Sportsman feature, Dan Hofmann Sr in the 20-lap DIRTcar Street Stocks main, Joe Gwilt in the 15-lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman event, and Bruce Unger in the 4-Cylinder Gladiators.

Sean Beardsley and Mike Bowman led the 25-car Big Block Modified field to the green flag to start the 35-lap main. Beardsley grabbed the early lead with Bowman in tow as the field scrambled behind them for early positions.

With five laps in the books, Beardsley still led, Bowman and Willy Decker ran side by side for second. Larry Wight, Tim Sears and Jimmy Phelps showed in the top-five.

Two-laps later, Bowman, using the high-side, was able to drive around Beardsley and into the lead. One lap later, Willy Decker moved into second as he was able to keep pace with the leader. On lap 11, Decker found speed on the bottom as he got around Bowman to be the new leader of the main. Bowman, Larry Wight, Tim Sears and Jimmy Phelps showed on the leader board.

At the halfway point, Decker was on cruise control out front. Sears, Bowman, Phelps and Billy Decker were having a tight battle for second through fifth. With no yellows and ten to go, Willy Decker still led, but Billy Decker started cutting into the lead. When the starter gave the five to go signal, the lead was down to a couple car-lengths.

On lap 32 and using all parts of the track, Billy Decker was able to drive around Willy Decker and into the lead. Over the final laps, Billy Decker was the first under the checkers. Willy Decker, Tim Sears, Alan Johnson and Jimmy Phelps rounded out the top-five.

“That was race right there, it was tough sledding out there,” said Decker. “This car was just phenomenal. The racing was tough out there, we were just fortunate enough to pick the right lines out there when we did. A few holes opened up and here we are.
“I was watching the 09 out there as we were racing the 83, just trying to figure out where we were better,” he added. “ We were just lucky, the 09 got caught behind a lapped car, that opened a lane on top. When you car is working as well as this one, Scott, Donnie and the guys, they work really hard on it. When it’s like this it’s a lot of fun I can tell you that.”

Sean McCarthy led the opening two laps of the 20-lap DIRTcar Sportsman feature. On lap 3, Greg Kimball was able to move from his fifth starting spot to grab the lead. With 5 laps in the books, Kimball held a slim lead as McCarthy, Jordan Bennett who started twelfth, Jon Tesoriero and Timmy Sears Jr. showed in the top-five.

While out front by nearly a straightaway, Kimball saw his lead disappear as a quick yellow would fly at the halfway point on lap ten. Everyone in attendance wondered if Kimball would be able to hold on for his first ever DIRTcar Sportsman win. Not only did Kimball hold on, he won the race going away to get to victory lane. Sears, Bennett, Billy Clark Jr. and John Pietrowicz rounded out the top-five.

“We had bad luck the last couple weeks, last week we had a push in the car, tonight it was working great,” Kimball said after his first ever Sportsman win. “I got to thank everybody who’s been helping me. Gary has been helping on the car. This is great I never expected this, to come out this early with a win.”

Dan Hofmann Sr. grabbed the lead at the drop of the green in the 20-lap DIRTcar Street Stock main. From there, Hofmann dominated and was never seriously challenged in the green to checker race. Ron Hawker, Steve Crouse, Rusty Marsden and Nick Rizzo finished behind Hofmann.
In the 15-lap E&V ENERGY Novice Sportman feature, Matthew Parkhurst led the opening lap before Jon Shumway took over the top spot on lap two. Shumway looked to be heading to victory lane, but Joe Gwilt was able to run down and pass Shumway with the two to go to pick up the win. Shumway, Parkhurst, Tom Carino Jr and Todd Williamson completed the top-five.

Bruce Unger backed up his win Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway with another win Saturday night in the 4-Cylinder Gladiators. Keith Zirbel, Jerry Herbert, Skip DeGroff and Eric M Zirbel chased Unger across the line.

Saturday, June 20 at the Fulton Speedway is Novelis Can Collection Night presented by Burke’s Do It Best Home Centers featuring DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds, DIRTcar Sportsman, DIRTcar Street Stocks, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, Mod Lite Series plus 4 Cylinder Gladiators.
